HI,
Reaching out the key members of the pro-open source user community there's a few track ideas I would like to share with everyone here.
A) I believe we can find volunteers to help get these tracks organized, so that they take minimal time from the core SCaLE team.
B) Question on how to help make procedures / infrastructure to assist in building these tracks.
Track ideas: 1) Open Data track / Civic Open Data - I believe this would make a great track, and that we can get the City of Pasadena, City of LA and OTHER cities to participate. They can use this track to help supplement their city run hack-a-thons. ( we can probably get the various Open Data SaaS providers to sponsor the tracks )
2) CTO mixer - we need imho to bring in CxOs into SCaLE to help bring great industry support and encourage their staffs to join us. Joe Devon who organizers and runs a lot of the pro-open source LA meetups is currently running a CTO mixer meetup - and discussing this with him seems like this would be a great fit for SCaLE. - I was thinking Thur would be a great day for this... and I would expect that we can get some good sponsorship for this.
3) Space / Space Open Data - NASA just had their Space App Challenge and it was well attended in Pasadena, as well as OC and they had events throughout the world. The also had Open Data available for attendees, and JPL has an Open Data proponent. With Space X also in LA we should be able to find some great opportunities to make a "Space / Space Open Data" track. We could have this be a Science Open Data track for 1 day followed by a Civic Open Data track
4) Storage track - Jordan Swartz talked to me about creating an Storage track Thur before DevOps day. Sounded like a great idea, and he seemed very interested in being the lead.
Qs: How do we coordinate and empower those interested in creating good tracks into SCaLE? Do I ask potential leads to join the planning list? Do we have any SaaS tools which are useful?
Thank You Matti
Hi Matti,
Good ideas.
A) If you can find them, more power to you. Typically, this is the hardest part. B) I can work with you on the infrastructure pieces.
Regarding tracks, the general method is to understand how many hours a track is and how many speakers we will need for the track (typically 5 if it's 1 hour talks) and what the appeal for the track is. Weekday/weekend will be determined at that point. Then, we either get someone to run the track (recruit speakers etc) and rope in Ilan for sponsorship, and the AV/tech team for room support etc.
Bala.

Regarding Space in LA area, don't forget X-Prize & Virgin Galactic are also here.
In fact, the timing of this message is good. I'm president of www.uncoded.org -- a non-profit in Long Beach that works at local connecting tech community -- and we hold a monthly tech mixer. Next week, Will Pomerantz, Vice President of Special Projects at Virgin Galactic (and previously with X-prize) will be our special guest.
It might make sense for one or two folks from the core SCaLE team to drop in, details: http://www.meetup.com/Uncoded/events/230279066/
Also, it's been a couple years but my web shop www.MediaDoneRight.com http://www.mediadoneright.com/ was also helpful in building www.SpaceX.com http://www.spacex.com/ -- I might even have a few contacts.

Wanted to respawn this thread as we prepare to open up our CFP.
Having an Open Data track sounds like a great idea, we will have this as one of our tracks.
Generally we have enough coverage in Storage but having a dedicated track would be something to try out.
Again, it would be great to have volunteers lead the tracks, that would include recruiting potential speakers and also leading it on the day-off, potentially setting up a theme for that track...
We will have a blurb for this in the CFP as well...

Hi Tom,
We will continue to have the embedded track for SCALE 2017 as well. It would be great if you can help set up a theme around the track, including the topics & potentially speakers that you may to have. Having a track lead for the specialized tracks is something that we are looking to do this year to help come up with an even better program.

Tom,
Can you provide a brief 2-3 sentence abstract for the track itself. What the goals of the track are and the broad topics you want to see covered? We need these for each track this year.
Thanks, Ilan

Having an Open Data track sounds like a great idea, we will have this as one of our tracks.
Generally we have enough coverage in Storage but having a dedicated track would be something to try out.
Again, it would be great to have volunteers lead the tracks, that would include recruiting potential speakers and also leading it on the day-off, potentially setting up a theme for that track...
We will have a blurb for this in the CFP as well...

HI,
Reaching out the key members of the pro-open source user community there's a few track ideas I would like to share with everyone here.
A) I believe we can find volunteers to help get these tracks organized, so that they take minimal time from the core SCaLE team.
B) Question on how to help make procedures / infrastructure to assist in building these tracks.
Track ideas:
- Open Data track / Civic Open Data - I believe this would make a great
track, and that we can get the City of Pasadena, City of LA and OTHER cities to participate. They can use this track to help supplement their city run hack-a-thons. ( we can probably get the various Open Data SaaS providers to sponsor the tracks )
- CTO mixer - we need imho to bring in CxOs into SCaLE to help bring
great industry support and encourage their staffs to join us.
- Space / Space Open Data - NASA just had their Space App Challenge and
it was well attended in Pasadena, as well as OC and they had events throughout the world. The also had Open Data available for attendees, and JPL has an Open Data proponent. With Space X also in LA we should be able to find some great opportunities to make a "Space / Space Open Data" track. We could have this be a Science Open Data track for 1 day followed by a Civic Open Data track
- Storage track - Jordan Swartz talked to me about creating an Storage
track Thur before DevOps day. Sounded like a great idea, and he seemed very interested in being the lead.
Qs: How do we coordinate and empower those interested in creating good tracks into SCaLE? Do I ask potential leads to join the planning list? Do we have any SaaS tools which are useful?
Thank You Matti

Hi Lan,
I'm not aware of anything written yet. I would be happy to try a draft and have people input to it.
Open Data - Government Data - thought would be to get the key people involved in this from the local cities to participate and showcase the best results and share with each other and the audience.
Open Data - Science - since we are not a science conference per se I was thinking it would be better to have the focus on something someone with a good BA/BS would understand (i.e. light on the heavy math and equations ) Ideally something about highlighting what is available and what has been done with that data by "outsiders"/ Hmm.. guess that would be more "citizen science" ... what do you think?
Thanks

Is there a blurb for either Open Data or for Science Open Data? I'm starting to reach out, but I would like to know what the focus is. Is it about promoting the data and tools that are already open to the public?

Hi Lan,
Please let your connections know we would really like to see something along this line at SCaLE and are very interested in working with anyone who is also interested to help make it happen, hopefully we can find like minded people who will have time to help out.
I think it is completely possible - it's only 5 talks or so for a day for a track, just need to reachout to the community members who would like to help make this happen ;-)
Thank You Matti

Wanted to respawn this thread as we prepare to open up our CFP.
Having an Open Data track sounds like a great idea, we will have this as one of our tracks.
Generally we have enough coverage in Storage but having a dedicated track would be something to try out.
Again, it would be great to have volunteers lead the tracks, that would include recruiting potential speakers and also leading it on the day-off, potentially setting up a theme for that track...
We will have a blurb for this in the CFP as well...

HI,
Reaching out the key members of the pro-open source user community there's a few track ideas I would like to share with everyone here.

- Open Data track / Civic Open Data - I believe this would make a
great track, and that we can get the City of Pasadena, City of LA and OTHER cities to participate. They can use this track to help supplement their city run hack-a-thons. ( we can probably get the various Open Data SaaS providers to sponsor the tracks )
- CTO mixer - we need imho to bring in CxOs into SCaLE to help bring
great industry support and encourage their staffs to join us.
- Space / Space Open Data - NASA just had their Space App Challenge
and it was well attended in Pasadena, as well as OC and they had events throughout the world.

I'll put together a proposed abstract for a CxO level track, Richard and Der Hans please review it, and I will also ask Joe Devon to review it.
imho it is critical that we have CxO level topics to get more buy in from the industry to make a stronger SCALE event.
I would like to see this track on Thru, that way when the CxOs can see the value of SCaLE they will still have an opportunity to send their employees to SCALE for Friday, perhaps even Sat and Sunday.
If we want to have small and medium business topics then I would like to see that in a separate track.

Hi Lori,
Would be delighted to have you and anyone else interested help out.
I think the track will evolve over time, the principle goal imho is to have compelling content for CxO types.
This is to balance out SCaLE and help ensure engagement and sponsorships.
As we grow and evolve the beginner and NG tracks we should imho also do so for the top end, as potential sponsors always ask me about influencers and decision makers.
I'll be working on a draft today and we can use that as a starting point.
Thank You Matti

Hi,
This is what I was thinking, it's a draft at this point, please feel free to chime in. ( perhaps we can do a slack session for more detailed discussion? )
"We would like to introduce a new track covering the nexus between CxOs and Open Source technology and concepts.
Purpose: To share experiences, knowledge, and network with each other regarding open source technology and concepts to enable more effective and robust business solutions from a CxO perspective.
Possible presentation topics: 1 - Open Source Licensing ( perhaps we can do a quick summary and point people to the legal track for more ) 2 - Fighting patent challenges 3 - How to retain and attract Open Source developers and promote Open Source contributions within the organization, and address the legal issues. 4 - ... Am 25. Aug, 2016 schwätzte Mx Siltanen so:
moin moin Matti,
I'll put together a proposed abstract for a CxO level track, Richard and Der Hans please review it, and I will also ask Joe Devon to review it.
OK, glad to help!
imho it is critical that we have CxO level topics to get more buy in from the industry to make a stronger SCALE event.
I would like to see this track on Thru, that way when the CxOs can see the value of SCaLE they will still have an opportunity to send their employees to SCALE for Friday, perhaps even Sat and Sunday.
Thursday works for me.
If we want to have small and medium business topics then I would like to see that in a separate track.
I'm in favor of concentrating on one business track for 2017. Let me know how I can help.
ciao,
der.hans
Thank You Matti

moin moin Ilan,
I dont believe we've confirmed a business track yet. At this point we're
asking anyone proposing new tracks to help write a brief abstract describe the track and the types of sessions it would include similar to this: https://gist.github.com/irabinovitch/215e6761994e6c4a1f24fad842a687d4
An enterprise track is listed on the cfp highlighting small and large businesses asking for real world examples.
If you're looking for someone for that track, then Richard and I will propose an abstract. If someone is already leading that track, then we want to volunteer to help.
ciao,
der.hans

moin moin,
I don't recall getting a confirmation one way or another and want to get moving either way.
Are Richard and I leading the enterprise track or is someone else?

moin moin,
Richard and I want to volunteer to run a business track, preferably Thursday.
Business - This track highlights the importance of FOSS to business success including business infrastructure, product development and the FOSS community ecosystem.
We would also like to work with or run the CxO mixter that Matti proposed and tie the two together.
ciao,
der.hans
Wanted to respawn this thread as we prepare to open up our CFP.
Having an Open Data track sounds like a great idea, we will have this as one of our tracks.
Generally we have enough coverage in Storage but having a dedicated track would be something to try out.
Again, it would be great to have volunteers lead the tracks, that would include recruiting potential speakers and also leading it on the day-off, potentially setting up a theme for that track...
We will have a blurb for this in the CFP as well...
Regards, Shyam
