moin moin,
can we push the deadline back a day for SCaLE18x?
Having the deadline on Halloween makes it difficult to finish last minute reviews and proposals for many of us.
Hope everyone had a great Halloween :).
ciao,
der.hans
We can move it earlier, if we can announce it earlier. Later makes review very difficult with the holidays.

imho
It would be very nice to have the deadline after some of the local events - like Hackaday supercon ( this weekend, 1st weekend of Nov. ) - where we can encourage those we meet there to post a presentation.
If we can do it even later - then we can promote the close of CFP at So Cal Code Camp LA - typically mid-November.
Closing it after either event imho would help us recruit presenters we may see at those events.
Of course, the other option is to close sooner than those events ( like we did this year ) - and allow an exception if we see some good presentations worth inviting.
Thank You

We need to be able to announce sessions earlier so as to allow for proper promotion to attendees, and more importantly to allow speakers to book reasonably priced travel. The longer we wait the more nebulous the conference is to first time attendees and exhibitors we want to reach.

The longer we wait the more nebulous the conference is to first time
attendees and exhibitors we want to reach.
I have encountered this often when promoting SCALE - showing first timers the past year's schedule has been very useful.
imho - Having a short video summarizing SCALE to potential exhibitors, sponsors, and attendees would be useful for this. Does not need to be long just a couple minutes showing some highlights of the past year's sessions, expo floor, ... we could use something along this line to help convey the message of what SCALE is.

I agree that Halloween is not the ideal deadline. Although I had submitted my proposals earlier in the week, I'd meant to edit it more, but got distracted. Would 11/1 have made that much of a difference?
I do prefer having having a confirmed list of speakers and presentations when I try to evangelize SCALE attendance at work. We have to forecast for conferences 3 months in advance, so showing the list of speakers and presentations could push someone into attending or having their managers approve attendance.
We promoted SCALE and the CFP at the SGVTech Open House. I happened to have old SCALE programs on hand, so that was useful. I'll think twice about tossing them now.
I had to field some questions from people I had recruited, who were worried about actually having to submit a paper and weren't sure which track to sign up for. Since I'd had experience applying and speaking at SCALE before, I told them it was just a short and long abstract for the talk they wanted to give and maybe a note to the reviewers with links to websites or previous talks.

moin moin,
Is there room for invited talks? Or perhaps a local events track?
I think we have a good variety of tracks. We also get great presentations and I'm glad to see newish speakers get the opportunity. So, from a topics perspective, I don't see a need to wait and hope for more participation. I also mostly don't see what proposals we get, so it might just be lack of knowledge on my part :).
Even though I'm not local, I do see the advantage of working with local groups and events. That's one of the reasons I love that a couple of the local user groups meet at SCaLE Thursday night rather than their normal location.
Do we track people we've run into that we'd like to see submit a proposal and send them invites?
I'm pretty certain Matti does some of that. I am very certain I'm bad at that :(.
Still, the last couple years I have done so and know that got us some proposals. At least two have been accepted :).
Thanks to those who are about to slog through all the proposals! We appreciate your work. We also benefit from it :).

I would just like one more day, have them due on Nov 1st rather than Oct 31st.
In general, I like that they're a little early.
I appreciate the work that people put in for proposal reviews and am glad we're mostly not imposing on the holidays.
It's also good to have some planning and promo time before the end of the year.
