This year we had 4 SSID, public 5ghz, public 2.4ghz, staff 5ghz, staff 2.4ghz. I think that we could drop the staff 2.4ghz and only use the the staff 5ghz one since staff(noc and AV only) for the most part have newer devices that support 5ghz. As for as hiding staff SSID that is a waste of time, I dont think many, if any of the public was thinking they needed to join to the staff network. At some point you cant fix stupid.
I think the biggest problem with SSID was the amount of non SCALE ssid showing up, where this was the biggest problem was on the expo floor where at any given time there was 20+ SSIDs.

having a map of the buildings as part of the signage rotation would probably be a good thing. Is it worth enough to loose 1/3 of the horizontal space to have a map up all the time (rotating between the two buildings) while the schedule rotation scrolls by on the rest of the screen?

Please keep the staff 2.4ghz - I found it very useful when in the PR / speaker room.

In the past, we named the Staff Wifi something that didn’t contain SCALE and wasn’t such an obvious target.
I suggest NSA_Van or similar as a good candidate. :P

As far as A/V goes we ran into the issue that our custom DNS sever was not available so while we could access stuff on our internal vlan(now that I think about it we could have manually configure dns to solve that) so we ended up using wired. Anyway I have had a lot of luck with openvpn in the past so maybe I will just setup vpn to allow access to A/V network. So I guess I would not be adverse to dropping the staff ssid in that case.

Before the password change on Saturday it was about 30-40 after the password change it was like 5-8. Tech and AV are the only ones that need to be connected to a different network since we access devices on the wired Network. Everyone else on staff for the most part only access internet address.

Last year we also had a problem getting the wifi up soon enough in the Expo floor. The fundamental problem is that we can't put in the network until the booths are built, and last year that happened about the same time the vendors were allowed to start setting up. It would be incredibly useful to get the booths setup a day earlier (it's not like the stuff or space is going to be used by anyone else while we are using the rest of the space on thursday)
With regards to staff wifi, Zach, do we have any stats on the number of people that used it? I'm trying to understand what the motivation for that was. We might be able to get away with not having one next time.
It's a security measure, we need tech and AV to get at things that nobody else should get to. While we could take other measures (VPN or authenticated connections), using a separate SSID is simple. In the past we didn't differentiate between the 2.4g and 5g staff network and had them share an SSID, but we had it hidden and encrypted with a different key.

Yep, as we've seen in the past, if we don't provide rock-solid access to the show floor, they will set something up themselves. They are used to shows where the provided wireless doesn't work well, if at all. Scale is one of the few places where they don't need to do their own.

I think the biggest problem with SSID was the amount of non SCALE ssid
showing up, where this was the biggest problem was on the expo floor where at any given time there was 20+ SSIDs.
We can't control all the hotel APs. We can remind exhibitors not to run their own, but only if we can ensure the wireless setup is flawless from the minute they show up.
