Hello, We have been speaking with the folks at USENIX about promoting SCALE via a booth at LISA. It looks like it should be doable, but what we're missing is the man power to run the booth. LISA will take place in San Diego during the second week of December. OT Linux migration question

Hi group, I thought that with your vast experience of Linux you might have ideas for me. I now have a chance to roll out linux desktops for public/client use in some small community service type non-profits. These machines will be used by people who are barely computer literate--maybe they have just enough windows experience to download lots of virusi, if you follow me. I figure my needs are: * an automated install--like kickstart, ya know... * a desktop that is easy to use for windows users (not a system that is easy to admin). It wouldn't hurt if the desktop *looked* like windows, too (aakkkk!) * system must be stable (idiot proof), does not have to be bleeding edge I welcome your suggestions Steve

SCALE Seeks New Tech Committee Chair

Hello SCALE fans, SCALE is currently looking for a new chairperson for our Technical committee. Responsibilities would include: - Design, implementation and coordination of all network connectivity during the conference. - Providing technical support with network related issues during the conference. - Evaluating power requirements and coordinating procurement with Facilities Chairman. - Administrating and maintaining SCALE servers (LAMP, Sendmail, various web apps). - Attending SCALE planning meetings. (70 / 30 mix IRC / in person). - Putting together a team of volunteers to help your before, during and after the show. SCALE Adds more Speakers, Sponsors, and Groups!

While most of the presentation tracks at SCALE are filling nicely, we have a large void in the beginner tutorials. This is our opportunity to present Open Source software to those who are merely interested, and we need to take advantage of this opportunity. Would you like to talk at SCALE? You don't need to be a Linux guru by any means. If you are comfortable speaking in front of a group, please consider volunteering for a beginner's tutorial. In this way you can contribute something back to OpenSource. Here are some ideas for beginner's topics. Feel free to come up with others! The topics should take around an hour, or perhaps a bit less to allow for some Q&A: - Overview of Linux - What's a 'distro', and what does it include? - Comparison of a few of the major distros - All about KDE - All about GNOME - Comparison of MS Office and OpenOffice - Linux equivalents for popular WinPrograms (good opportunity for a handout) - LiveCD's - what are they, and what's out there? - How to maintain a Linux system (yum, apt, yast, urpmi, etc.) - Very basic TCP/IP networking. - How to set up a basic Windows-share (via Samba) - How to use set up and use WebMin - Basic Wireless Networking (TOPIC ALREADY TAKEN) For those interested, please email your topic idea to kapadia(a)socallinuxexpo.com.
