In another thread, Chris Smith said "A recurring theme I observed this
year with people new to SCALE was that they weren't as aware of
SCALE's offerings as one might hope."
Should we make a "new to SCALE" guide on the website and link to it in
the registration emails?
Should we take 1-2 pages near the front of the printed program and put
the "new to SCALE" guide there?
Did anyone go to the SCALE 101 talk? [1] Was it useful? Should we have
held it on Friday, instead or ran a second session on Friday?

Caryl, that is a cute infographic. If we can come up with the content you want to express, I can see if I can sweet-talk one of my LUG members into doing the art; she is good with that style and we have enough lead time that I might be able to fit it in her queue. Though the high school students I mentor are also great at drawing cute cartoons, so that's another avenue.

Hi...
I just came across this cute graphic on the CUE Los Angeles FB page. It is to help first-timers get the most out of next week's National CUE Conference in Palm Springs. Something similar could be made up and put in the program. Here is a link to the graphic: https://www.facebook.com/cue.losangeles/photos/rpp.164746903599002/13978054…

I really like the short video idea, we definitely can use a few to help give people an idea of what SCALE is all about.

I was just going for hitting more modalities with minimalist effort. In reality, before you arrive at a conference, you've at least somewhat locked in your plans and your schedule. I figure a talk at the conference might be too late for many newbies. So,
a video of said talk that you check out well before you attend would fit the bill. If someone wants to put together some short length videos on the subject, I would definitely support that idea.

At my workplace, HR did a series of short videos on specific topics aimed at new employees. That is a lot easier to digest than a long video that tries to cover everything. It also helps that it had good production values.

I say we email out the video of the talk to at least new attendees.

Gonna answer these in reverse.
The SCALE 101 talk, like last year, was not well attended (about 15 people,
including those that filtered in late), but the panel / Q&A portion was
incredibly interactive, nearly everyone asked questions or commented, and
nearly all of them either stayed late to thank me or found me later to do so.
Ilan had a suggestion that we do this between the keynote and the first
session, in the keynote room. It's a good suggestion, but we'd probably have
to move the keynote slightly earlier to account for the panel, which I think
is the magic of it all (since I think the breaks are only half hour).
This would I think be more useful than stuff in the program which people don't
read as it is.

moin moin,
do we have a repo of SCaLE stats?
Things like total number of attendees along with breakdown of checkins per
day, number of expo booths ( and vendor/group listings ), number of tracks
per day, etc.
I've seen a tech roundup most years. Thanks again to the tech team for all
the work they put in and for the follow up reports.

Hey everyone!
I understand there is a conversation starting about replacing Guidebook
in favor of a SCaLE mobile app. I'm just getting started doing mobile
apps and I'd like to volunteer to work on that project as it would make
a great portfolio piece for me. I did some development work on the A/V
camera control system for this past SCaLE and I have some ideas on how
to we can do something great for this project as well. Let me know what
you think!

moin moin,
Like last year, I overheard many many comments about how great the
location is. Most comments were about food options and having walkable
areas, but many were also about the PCC venue itself.
I personally think the location is awesome. I made a personal trip to LA
after SCaLE last year and intentionally stayed in Pasadena. My family
loved it as well.
I can't compare options in other cities as I don't know the area.
I can say having a more open walkable area is great. It's definitely more
family friendly.
Having lots of restaurant options was a refreshing change last year :).
I also like the PCC venue. We have better sizing options with the
ballrooms. Having two buildings isn't much of a problem and is a
significant improvement over two floors, narrow hallways and a single
staircase.
The one big negative is that attendees are spread out to more hotels. It
was great having most of us in one place with evening hallway track near
the presentation rooms and in the hotel lobby and bar before Pasadena.
Last year I stayed at the Westin. The walk back and forth wasn't bad, but
I enjoyed being onsite at the Sheraton this year. We had mini-hallway
track at the Sheraton every night.
Having other local options does make it easy to interact with local
friends who weren't at the conference. I met with a friend I haven't seen
in many years and we had a great evening catching up. There's a pretty
good chance he'll attend next year as he was impressed by the schedule :).
Thanks to everyone who worked to make SCaLE happen and especially those
who had significant extra work due to the change of venue!
ciao,

# Strangers are friends just waiting to happen!
What can we do to improve signage? How was the digital signage this
year? The printed signs on easels? What were the hardest things to
find, aside from SCALE t-shirts? ;)
Below are some frequent questions at registration I remember
answering. Possibly an indicator of what we didn't have signs for.
1) What is the WiFi password? We eventually put up a shirt with the
password on it.
2) Which WiFi do I connect to? There were several SSIDs with SCALE in the name.
3) Where is Ballroom X? (GH especially)
4) Where is Room NNN?
5) What are the expo hall hours? (Usually when it's not open yet) Or a
similar question from exhibitors for when they can go in for set up.
6) Do you validate parking?
7) Is there SCALE-provided lunch? (Usually at lunch time)
8) Where is the Starbucks? (Cofffeeeeeeee)
This year we moved SCALE t-shirt pick up from registration to a booth
in the corner of the expo floor. Did this make registration less
chaotic? Was the t-shirt booth too hard to find? Is the change a net
improvement from past years?
FYI -
Clearly a number of people were purchasing the expo pass to attend the
presentations:
"I friend told me that the expo pass is cheaper, I think it’s $20, I don’t
know what it’s limitations are. The talks I saw today were fantastic, total"
