SCaLE App
by Derek 10 Mar '17

10 Mar '17

Hey everyone! I understand there is a conversation starting about replacing Guidebook in favor of a SCaLE mobile app. I'm just getting started doing mobile apps and I'd like to volunteer to work on that project as it would make a great portfolio piece for me. I did some development work on the A/V camera control system for this past SCaLE and I have some ideas on how to we can do something great for this project as well. Let me know what you think! -- /Derek Nowicki Knowiki Apps 818-262-9565/

Pasadena feedback
by der.hans 10 Mar '17

moin moin, Like last year, I overheard many many comments about how great the location is. Most comments were about food options and having walkable areas, but many were also about the PCC venue itself. I personally think the location is awesome. I made a personal trip to LA after SCaLE last year and intentionally stayed in Pasadena. My family loved it as well. I can't compare options in other cities as I don't know the area. I can say having a more open walkable area is great. It's definitely more family friendly. Having lots of restaurant options was a refreshing change last year :). I also like the PCC venue. We have better sizing options with the ballrooms. Having two buildings isn't much of a problem and is a significant improvement over two floors, narrow hallways and a single staircase. The one big negative is that attendees are spread out to more hotels. It was great having most of us in one place with evening hallway track near the presentation rooms and in the hotel lobby and bar before Pasadena. Last year I stayed at the Westin. The walk back and forth wasn't bad, but I enjoyed being onsite at the Sheraton this year. We had mini-hallway track at the Sheraton every night. Having other local options does make it easy to interact with local friends who weren't at the conference. I met with a friend I haven't seen in many years and we had a great evening catching up. There's a pretty good chance he'll attend next year as he was impressed by the schedule :). Thanks to everyone who worked to make SCaLE happen and especially those who had significant extra work due to the change of venue! ciao, der.hans -- # http://www.LuftHans.com/ http://www.PhxLinux.org/ # Strangers are friends just waiting to happen!

Signage
by Lei Zhang 10 Mar '17

10 Mar '17

What can we do to improve signage? How was the digital signage this year? The printed signs on easels? What were the hardest things to find, aside from SCALE t-shirts? ;) Below are some frequent questions at registration I remember answering. Possibly an indicator of what we didn't have signs for. 1) What is the WiFi password? We eventually put up a shirt with the password on it. 2) Which WiFi do I connect to? There were several SSIDs with SCALE in the name. 3) Where is Ballroom X? (GH especially) 4) Where is Room NNN? 5) What are the expo hall hours? (Usually when it's not open yet) Or a similar question from exhibitors for when they can go in for set up. 6) Do you validate parking? 7) Is there SCALE-provided lunch? (Usually at lunch time) 8) Where is the Starbucks? (Cofffeeeeeeee)

Did you like having SCALE t-shirt pick up on the expo floor?
by Lei Zhang 10 Mar '17

This year we moved SCALE t-shirt pick up from registration to a booth in the corner of the expo floor. Did this make registration less chaotic? Was the t-shirt booth too hard to find? Is the change a net improvement from past years?

Expo Pass
by Mx Siltanen 09 Mar '17

FYI - Clearly a number of people were purchasing the expo pass to attend the presentations: "I friend told me that the expo pass is cheaper, I think it’s $20, I don’t know what it’s limitations are. The talks I saw today were fantastic, total"

t-shirts in storage
by Lan Dang 08 Mar '17

08 Mar '17

Hi all, As we have been trying to retire the previous thread on t-shirts on the expo floor, I will start a new one. My intent is to remove all of the old t-shirts from storage either this weekend or next weekend. Before SCaLE 15x, there were 3 or 4 Gildan boxes of t-shirts, some of which were A/V shirts. Does anyone know how many boxes of SCaLE 15x shirts went into storage? Lori and Matti would like to keep some shirts for volunteer recruitment and or SCALE promotion, so I will set aside a large selection for them. I was planning on keeping some for SGVLUG, in case people missed out on shirts or wanted more shirts. I'm keeping all the A/V t-shirts as I like the design and my current shirts have holes in them. If anyone else would like shirts, you can email me offlist. There is a donation drive for a women's shelter at work in a couple of weeks, and I intend on donating a box or two there. If there are kid's shirts, I will see if Ronald McDonald house will take them. I hope that after all this, there will be no shirts left over and we can start SCaLE 16x fresh. Let me know if you have a problem with this plan. Any logistics can probably be handled offline. I'm located in San Gabriel and pass through Pasadena all the time. Lan

Need a way to enable better engagement through the year
by Mx Siltanen 08 Mar '17

08 Mar '17

How to enable better engagement with the different pro-open source people and groups throughout the year? Example of issue: I will pitch people to engage in participating in SCaLE - and the person may give me a business card asking me to remind them when the event is "closer" ( time wise ), and or to tell them more about the event. As our next event approaches I will quickly run short of spare cycles and thus unable to fulfill such requests. I would like us to have something better which will allow a better early and constant opportunity to increase engagement opportunities. Potential Solutions to assist: 1) Business Card sized "flyers" which gives the basics [ I plan to create this, which we can all use ] SCaLE Inclusive Pitchline Date of Next event CFP deadline website landing page The idea is that it will be easy for each of us to carry a few around should we ever need to pass out one to someone we are chatting with. 2) ... [ please feel free to assist in contributing ideas which may help ] Thank You Matti

Questions from Helen on forgetting password
by Wang, Jing (Helen) 08 Mar '17

To whom it may concern, I feel truly happy when working and promoting the scale 15x. However I forgot my password and cannot reset it. It won't send the resend link to me. I believe my email is jing.wang.2017(a)marshall.usc.edu Sincerely, Helen Wang

Expo Pass (Other Issues and Suggestions)
by Caryl Bigenho 08 Mar '17

Hi... If the name badge part of the print out could take up 2 adjacent regions so it could be folded in half and the name could be seen from both sides it would solve the problem of 50% of the people wearing badges that show as blank white cards (the back of the name card). It is nice to be able to speak to people by their names, but half the time it isn't possible (unless you already know them... but maybe you haven't seem them for a while and can't remember their names?). If this is done, the fold should be on the lower edge of the badge for easy insertion into the badge holder. Caryl
