SCALE Next Generation (Youth Track) Playground - Call for Volunteers

Hi all, *We need your help for the SCALE Next Generation (TNG)/Youth Track!* We are putting together a "Playground" for the TNG track at SCALE this year that will run in parallel to the TNG talks on Saturday from 10am-6pm and consist of hands-on areas/pods where kids can come and go throughout the day. There is a room that is being finalized for the playground activities. We are proposing that each pod have 4 stations with very concrete instructions printed out. Kids could be encouraged to pair up as they come to the Playground or they could do the activities on their own. The Playground would be 'staffed' by volunteers who sign-up for 1-hour or longer shifts - we would aim for 1 volunteer per pod at all times. *There are 3 things that we need help with: * 1. *Finalizing the pods and providing tutorials for youth to do*. What we'd like is a beginner and advanced exercise at each pod that youth can do mostly independently. The proposed list of ideas is below, but if you have another idea that incorporates FOSS or open hardware, we'd love to hear it. Flyers are easy to pass around, whether you just intend on emailing them or if you plan on printing and posting them around campus. Over the past couple of years, I've promoted SCaLE heavily via email. Here is an example of what I would say. When I address students or educators, I usually tell them about the standing "STDNT" discount code, which requires verification of student/teacher id onsite. ================= The Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE) is a large volunteer-run open source technology conference that will be at the Pasadena Convention Center on March 2-5, 2017. It is a family-friendly conference that serves a diverse audience from IT professionals to students and educators and even youth. Talks run the gamut from super-technical to beginner and also cover soft skills like mentorship, community building or professional development. The 4-day pass price will be $85 until Feb 21st and will go up to $90 after that. If you just want to check out the exhibit hall, the expo pass is $20. There is a promotional code ("<insert promo code here>") that will take 50% off the 4-day SCALE Pass. https://register.socallinuxexpo.org/reg6/ There are a large number of collocated meetings like Ubucon, DevOps Days, Open Infra Day, Bad Voltage Live, etc. There are also informal gatherings called Birds of a Feather sessions, after the formal programming, which allow you to meet with other attendees to talk about your specific interests. This year, there appears to be a lot of talks on containers and Docker as well as some tutorials for Kubernetes. There are talks about open source in enterprise. We have strong educational and youth programming as well. On Saturday, we have a youth track called The Next Generation(TNG), where our young technologists give talks to their peers and others. On Sunday, , our educators have their turn with talks about using Open Source Software in Education (OSSIE). In addition, there is a pretty awesome game night on Saturday night that starts around 8pm for families and is opened at 9pm for the rest of us. (Kids usually get in free if accompanied by adult.) Coder help with Design/Graphics

Hey All, So, working on the printed program for SCALE every year is one of the most challenging tasks for the graphics/design team. If there is someone who is proficient in python and willing to learn a specific application's API, you could probably save us days of work (especially if changes happen close to the expo). Basically, I need a way to pseudo-automate populating the daily schedules for SCALE within Scribus. I spoke with a couple developers for the application and was pointed to this repository: https://gitorious.org/schedule-csv2scribus-rmll/schedule-csv2scribus-rmll?p… ... which has the relevant files to generate pages within Scribus from CSV files. Anyone interested, willing to do some digging, and want to talk more about it? It would be greatly appreciated if I could get a hand in this area. Cheers, Josh

Cryptoparty?

Hi Folks! I heard this piece on NPR yesterday and immediately thought... wow! That's something that could be done at SCaLE. Surely, there are going to be a lot of experts there who could help do this. The real challenge would be finding a place to put it in the schedule. Maybe an evening BOF? Maybe an early event with breakfast and a fee to cover the food (or maybe an "angel" would sponsor it)? Maybe running parallel to some other evening event? HI Ilan and Bala and All! I have been looking over the SCaLE 15X schedule and I have a few questions and comments… Q: Is there going to be a Game Night this year. Which evening and what is the time schedule? Q: What is the venue for “Bad Voltage?” In one place it says “Ballroom DE” in another, it says it will be “at the historic Castle Green.” So, where is it going to be? Q: Can you explain more about the “Capture The Flag” event on Saturday? Has the time been set for that? What will participants be doing and what, if anything do they need to bring? Comment: Ruth Suehle’s name should be added in the Sunday 3-4pm time slot in the OSSIE track. She and Tom Calloway co-authored the RPI book and will be speaking together. Comment: I need to start lining up volunteers for the booth. In past years we were able to provide them with free registration in exchange for their donation of time in the booth. Q: When will the registration codes for these volunteers be available so they can register? Q: Kenneth will have a “Speakers” badge and registration. Am I, as co-chair of the OSSIE track, a member of the planning committee? If so, what code do I need to register? Comment: I am going to make up a page with links about OSSIE at SCaLE and try to get it posted on the CUE websites and maybe I’ll send it to the Computer Science departments and education departments at local colleges. I was thinking of doing a BOF for OSSIE either Friday or Saturday and having flyers in the booth. Q: Does anyone have any ideas for more publicity for OSSIE? That’s all I can remember for now.
