Game Night volunteering

if you've attended Game Night in the past and would like to work behind the scenes this year, now is the time to let me know. this year's party is going to be the biggest one yet. we have great new ideas to put into action, and it's always a little surprising how everything finally turns out. we split up the work so everyone has time to play. day volunteers who would like to help with Game Night can work on saturday or sunday. four saturday teams set up the party, run the party events, and help pack things up. the sunday team takes the truck back to storage (it's just up the street) and puts everything away for next year. if you'd like to be part of Game Night, shoot me an email with your cell phone number, and we'll find a spot for you on a team. ...lori

Volunteer with ADHD denied visa waiver to attend SCaLE and help with the olpc2.0 booth!

Hi folks... We may have lost one of our booth volunteers who was to fly in from England next week. It seems that his visa waiver was denied because he marked on his application that he has ADHD! Can you imagine! How many programmers, hackers, etc have ADHD???!!! We are trying to get Sen. Diane Feinstein to help with this, but he may not be able to come. I wonder if others from outside the US will run into similar hitches??? Caryl

Question about Saturday keynote speaker

Hi all, I saw a SCALE Newsletter that said that Dr. Christine Corbett Moran of Caltech will be the keynote speaker for Saturday. I can see the entry on the schedule, but I'm perplexed why this was not announced on the SCaLE website or Twitter. http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/15x/speakers/christine-corbett-moran She's one of my selling points for promoting SCaLE to the Caltech/JPL community, so I would like to know if I'm being premature in advertising this. SCALE Next Generation (Youth Track) Playground - Call for Volunteers

Hi all, *We need your help for the SCALE Next Generation (TNG)/Youth Track!* We are putting together a "Playground" for the TNG track at SCALE this year that will run in parallel to the TNG talks on Saturday from 10am-6pm and consist of hands-on areas/pods where kids can come and go throughout the day. There is a room that is being finalized for the playground activities. We are proposing that each pod have 4 stations with very concrete instructions printed out. Kids could be encouraged to pair up as they come to the Playground or they could do the activities on their own. The Playground would be 'staffed' by volunteers who sign-up for 1-hour or longer shifts - we would aim for 1 volunteer per pod at all times. *There are 3 things that we need help with: * 1. *Finalizing the pods and providing tutorials for youth to do*. What we'd like is a beginner and advanced exercise at each pod that youth can do mostly independently. The proposed list of ideas is below, but if you have another idea that incorporates FOSS or open hardware, we'd love to hear it. Flyers are easy to pass around, whether you just intend on emailing them or if you plan on printing and posting them around campus. Over the past couple of years, I've promoted SCaLE heavily via email. Here is an example of what I would say. When I address students or educators, I usually tell them about the standing "STDNT" discount code, which requires verification of student/teacher id onsite. ================= The Southern California Linux Expo (SCaLE) is a large volunteer-run open source technology conference that will be at the Pasadena Convention Center on March 2-5, 2017. It is a family-friendly conference that serves a diverse audience from IT professionals to students and educators and even youth. Talks run the gamut from super-technical to beginner and also cover soft skills like mentorship, community building or professional development. The 4-day pass price will be $85 until Feb 21st and will go up to $90 after that. If you just want to check out the exhibit hall, the expo pass is $20. There is a promotional code ("<insert promo code here>") that will take 50% off the 4-day SCALE Pass. https://register.socallinuxexpo.org/reg6/ There are a large number of collocated meetings like Ubucon, DevOps Days, Open Infra Day, Bad Voltage Live, etc. There are also informal gatherings called Birds of a Feather sessions, after the formal programming, which allow you to meet with other attendees to talk about your specific interests. This year, there appears to be a lot of talks on containers and Docker as well as some tutorials for Kubernetes. There are talks about open source in enterprise. We have strong educational and youth programming as well. On Saturday, we have a youth track called The Next Generation(TNG), where our young technologists give talks to their peers and others. On Sunday, , our educators have their turn with talks about using Open Source Software in Education (OSSIE). In addition, there is a pretty awesome game night on Saturday night that starts around 8pm for families and is opened at 9pm for the rest of us. (Kids usually get in free if accompanied by adult.)
