Hello folks,
Over the past few months, there was been a lot of activity behind the
scenes in the tech channel to figure out the state of things and how to
move forward after the attrition of some of the key members. Before we go
further, I want to highlight some of the progress we have made in the last
few months :
1) We have moved the servers from ACTUSA to Rackspace.
2) We have moved the DNS to route53 (Amazon).
3) We have moved all the configuration of the servers to Chef, and
everything has been published in our public github channel (
https://github.com/socallinuxexpo).
4) Some work still remains on finalizing a network infrastructure model for
SCALE 15X. We had a tentative plan with Ubiquity gear, but that fell
through, so we are a little behind on this task.
These tasks look trivial when itemized in this manner, but for the several
of us that worked on these tasks, they were pretty daunting at first.
To that end, many of us have come to realize that while they are related,
the management of the server infrastructure and the network infrastructure
require vastly different skill sets. The former is a year long activity,
and the latter primarily activates a few weeks before the show and major
activity ends the day the show is done. Therefore, we have decided to split
the team into two - one for server infrastructure, and the other for
network infrastructure.
Phil D will take over the server infrastructure team, and I will let him
announce his key team members. I will continue to handle the network team
until we find a more permanent replacement.
As always, I welcome your comments. If you are interested in working with
Phil on the new team, please reach out to him at phil(a)socallinuxexpo.org
Thanks,
Bala
Heh, it's all good. I respond to both :)

Actually, a large (double) booth like we have had before as a .org could double as a "second room."
The folks are getting anxious because there is no place to file their proposals in any of the regular tracks. Can we tell them they will be OK for the OSSIE track? The only downside I see to this is that there may be other folks who could contribute to the track that might not have a chance. Let's see how things go at 15X and maybe plan to expand OSSIE for 16X.
To reiterate... yes, OSSIE-SoCal/Unleash Kids/olpc 2.0/etc would like a booth at SCaLE 15X!
Thanks! Caryl (for the OSSIE team)

FYI - this may interest some here, especially those in SF as there is a
special event Sat:
Aaron Swartz Day and International Hackathon
http://www.aaronswartzday.org/
FYI - SCALE 15x now listed as a sponsor to So Cal Code Camp LA, coming up
Nov 12-13, 2016
What does this mean to us for possible action items:
1) Links back to https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/15x/
Thus if we want to update that landing page, now is a good time to consider
what we would like to do.
2) As a part of the partners, we are expected to help promote the event.
I have been assisting them with community outreach, and I would like to see
us do a little more.
A) Twitter - we should send a tweet encouraging participation.
B) Email newsletter - no is a good time to send a message out to people
reminding them about SCALE 15x call for papers as well as the new date, we
can also include - something on our partners at So Cal Code Camp.
[ I am happy to write the email newsletter announcement if someone would
like to proof it and make any adjustments as needed. ]
3) So Cal Code Camp LA - STILL has available rooms for presentations, IF
anyone associated with SCALE would like to do a presentation, I HIGHLY
encourage it. You can then use that presentation to help promote SCALE by
announcing when you wrap it up.. "Learn more at SCALE"...
Thank You
Matti
moin moin,
Are there any GNU/Linux, OpenStack, Puppet, etc users groups having a
meeting in or near Santa Clara, CA during the week next week?
I doubt I'll have a car or time to get into the City.
