SCALE IRC meeting reminder

Just a reminder; the So Cal Linux Expo will be holding an open IRC meeting tonight, July 8th, at 6 p.m. Pacific. The meeting will be held on the irc.oftc.net server, in the #scale-chat channel. During the meeting, we'll: 1) Announce the dates for SCALE 6X 2) Talk about things that the chairs plan to focus on for S6X 3) Open the "floor" up for suggestions and ideas from others. This is your forum to air your concerns and post your questions to the SCALE staff. We can't guarantee we'll have all the answers, but we CAN guarantee you'll be listened to. If you've never used IRC, don't feel intimidated or left out; it's easy to use. On Linux, good IRC programs are XChat, Kopete, Konversation, and Pidgin. Most distributions either come with one or more of them, or have them in their repositories for downloading and installation. On Windows, Pidgin, MIRC and PIRCH (among others) are available, from download.com, or their websites. Give it a shot and join us!

Volunteers for Sponsorship Committee

Hello, Its about that time again this year and we are starting to plan for SCALE 6x, the 2008 Southern California Linux Expo. As we begin our sponsorship drive, the sponsorship committee is looking for additional volunteers this year. This committee is responsible for recruiting all of the sponsors and commercial exhibitors you have seen at SCALE over the years. Is there a company you haven't seen at SCALE that you will like see in Feb 2008? Now is your chance to help make that happen! Sponsorship programs are the primary source of funding for the SCALE event. This funding allows us to continue bringing the community a high caliber event like SCALE. Funds are used to bring in great speaker sessions, offer free booths to .orgs, and more.... If you consider yourself a people person, are good on the phone, and are able to commit a few hours a week to assist us with the sponsorship process, we would greatly appreciate your help. While this is an unpaid volunteer position, it will provide you with a great opportunity to make business/marketing contacts in the open-source industry. Volunteers would: - Work with the sponsorship chair to identify potential sponsors and exhibitors. - Contact potential sponsors with the SCALE sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities (telephone and e-mail). - Meet with potential sponsors at other community events. - Assisting sponsors with preparations for SCALE. - Ensuring sponsors are satisfied and have everything they need during the show. SCALE @ OSCON

Hello, SCALE will have a presence on the O'Reilly OSCON 2007 expo floor. We will be using the space to promote our 2008 conference SCALE 6x, as well as to provide information about UserGroups in the Southern California area. The OSCON expo floor is open July 25-26, 2007 in Portland, Oregon. If you are planning on attending OSCON and are available/interested we would welcome your help in help to prepare or man the booth. So I was mentioning to someone that each year we post audio recordings... and they said they couldn't find last year's recordings on the site. So I went to poke around, and I can't find them either. Coming to SCALE? Important note!

If you plan on staying at the Westin LAX hotel for the So Cal Linux Expo this weekend, and you haven't made reservations yet, please note - the hotel has informed us that from this point on, you should contact the hotel operator directly rather than using either the reservations phone number or the online reservations system. SCALE finalizes Expo Details

The Southern California Linux Expo is this weekend in Los Angeles. Here are some last minute details: The Expo has added one additional speaker. Doug Hass, Director of Business Development for ImageStream, will speak on "Advanced Quality of Service and Firewalls using Linux" His presentation covers the key concepts of quality of service and access list filtering using Open Source tools. The presentation includes an explanation of filtering using Linux's iptables tool and standard queuing methods as defined in the Differentiated Services RFC as well as applications of these methods through generic case studies. The Expo has added another BOF, "Schools And Open Source Software". There are a few BOF (Birds Of a Feather) session slots still available at SCALE on Sunday. If your group needs a meeting room for a BOF, contact gareth(a)socallinuxexpo.com to reserve one. The current BOFs can be viewed at http://socallinuxexpo.com/scale5x/events/bof.php If you live nearby, and have surplus electronic equipment you'd like to discard, you can bring it to SCALE and dispose of it legally. Access to the drop off point is a bit circuitous; we've created a map showing the approach and departure from the drop off area. If you are bringing equipment to dispose of, make sure you consult the map prior to leaving for the Westin. The map can be found at http://socallinuxexpo.com/scale5x/events/ewaste.php If you don't register ahead of time and have a question about the Expo during the Expo weekend, the SCALE phone number will be manned by Registration personnel during show hours. The Vendor showcases currently booked are IBM with "Business Innovation Through Linux", and Verio with "Linux Virtualization in Action". SCALE needs your help

Given that SCALE is an all-volunteer organization, our pool of available manpower tends to be a bit variable. Now is one of those times when the pool needs a bit of refilling. We need some volunteers to assist with the following tasks at SCALE 5x - manning the Registration booth - helping exhibitors move in - helping the tech committee lay cable Friday - checking badges at the door - Introducing speakers, and otherwise managing the speaker rooms and tracks - and probably others chores not mentioned above What's in it for you? Preparation continues for Linux Expo next month

The final touches are being put on the Fifth Annual So Cal Linux Expo, to be held February 9th to 11th in Los Angeles. All speaker slots are full, and all exhibitor booths have been filled. The seven speaker slots in the Women In Open Source conference have been filled and its speaker panel is being finalized. The lineup for the the Open Source Health Care Summit is almost complete. (Both those mini-conferences are on Friday February 9th). The BOF (Birds Of a Feather) session slots on Saturday have been filled, but there are still slots on Sunday available. Current BOF sessions are shown at http://socallinuxexpo.com/scale5x/events/bof.php. If your group needs a meeting or discussion room, contact gareth(a)socallinuxexpo.com to reserve one. The deadline for BOF reservations is February 2nd. Attendees will be able to dispose of electronic equipment at the Expo. There's no charge.
