Hi all
I was thinking that next year, instead of having a dedicated room for TNG Playground, that we can do it in a common area of the Expo hall instead. It would drive traffic to the Expo hall. We could have a mix of activities that are either kid-friendly or aimed at an older crowd.
The STEM groups that helped out last year are interested in having community booths this year, so doing things in the Expo hall would be more convenient and may encourage more participation from other exhibitors.
Since this will involve identifying a space that will have access to power and/or Internet, I'd like to know what to do to move this idea forward.
Thoughts?

I like the idea of driving traffic. How much space would we need for this?

Hi...
I'd love to work with Kenneth on this... being sure to include fun things for all ages! Do you want other maker faire ideas or just software/hardware?
Caryl
P.S. I have been rather obsessed with the upcoming elections... both the Montana races for house and senate and the House race here in swing district, CA-25. After Tuesday, I will be much more available to participate in SCaLE planning things. ________________________________ From: Scale-planning scale-planning-bounces@lists.linuxfests.org on behalf of Kenneth Wyrick kmw@caltek.net Sent: Thursday, November 1, 2018 11:42 PM To: SCALE Planning List Subject: Re: [Scale-planning] Hands-on activities in the Expo hall?

Caryl, Kenneth
It's great that you want to work on this. That is what I was hoping for.
I envisioned space at the other end of the Expo hall with a few large round tables with power and either reliable wifi or wired connections. Maybe access to loaner computers and hardware like Arduinos, so things can be set up ahead of time.
The adult-friendly activities should be fun or valuable enough to lure people into the expo hall, but not require such a time commitment that they'd need to make a choice about whether to attend a talk. The key would be that the activities are something people could just stop by, participate, and leave.
The kid-friendly activities could be similar to what was done at TNG Playground last year but I don't want to distract from TNG speaker track on Saturday. We could ramp things up on Sunday, maybe.
Ideas for activities: Scratch programming. Resume clinic. Lockpicking. Linux clinic. Learn something with Jupyter Notebooks. Learn how to solder. Making LED flowers or wearable electronics. A brief primer on securing data privacy. How to get started with GitHub. Vim Adventures. Maybe VR or AR experiences.
I recently had fun with JavaScript with this activity: https://codeclubprojects.org/en-GB/webdev/pixel-art/
It'd be even better if we can pull in participation from the sponsor booths. It would allow them to interact with the attendees in a way they may not be able to do at the booths due to booth arrangement or too short of an interaction. Maybe we could set aside a table that could be reserved Birds of a Feather-style.

i love this idea! keep in mind it's a bigger challenge to staff an activity zone all day long instead of at a specific time. we'd probably want to time slice the areas to avoid inevitable empty intervals.

i know sponsors sometimes feel constrained by the small booth area, and wonder how much they might enjoy free space elsewhere for oddball demos.

Won’t this affect any happy hour events that happen on the expo floor? Happy hours contribute towards our F&B obligations at the venue, so they are important too. On Sat, Nov 3, 2018 at 6:47 AM Lori Barfield itdirector@gmail.com wrote:

Yes, I suppose that’s a point. I was just thinking about having kids in the same vicinity as a happy hour. I suppose it’s not too different from the game night.

ah, i see. that's a consideration, but i don't think a limitation. i believe lan is thinking you'd have to pass through the main sponsor area to get to a rear area for the special events. we can cut things off early timewise, too- but if anything, having kids in the back just means more parents hanging out in the expo hall during happy hour.

Yep, the idea is that they have to go to the opposite end of the Expo hall, which means they should go by a whole bunch of booths.
I was expecting to have all the activities to be time sliced. It gives people an excuse to visit the expo hall frequently if there is always something different going on. Would 2-hour blocks be best?
And I really want it to be something the community and sponsor booths participate in, so we don't have to necessarily staff it the whole time, beyond coordinating and keeping an eye on any loaner equipment.
We should have some way of displaying the schedule of the activities to the rest of SCALE and at registration, especially if they get organized at the last minute.

it would be great to find extra activities that could be staffed by vendors, so here's one idea. one of the nonprofit training centers i have a relationship with has a hybrid offering that might work in the expo hall. it's a low cost 3-D printer package targeting parents which comes with a 2-hr workshop, so they can maintain it and teach their kids to use it. they also offer a followup 3-D design class for kids. having all this in one area might make sales and an interesting show for onlookers.
now that the PCC has relaxed its rule about soldering irons, i wonder if we could also have 3-D printers in the expo hall.

i have not heard back from the PVNet folks on this, so it feels like their level of interest is not high. i don't know anyone else who has that much equipment, so unless someone else chimes in along with john, a large-scale 3D printer offering is unlikely to happen.

it would be great to find extra activities that could be staffed by vendors, so here's one idea. one of the nonprofit training centers i have a relationship with has a hybrid offering that might work in the expo hall. it's a low cost 3-D printer package targeting parents which comes with a 2-hr workshop, so they can maintain it and teach their kids to use it. they also offer a followup 3-D design class for kids. having all this in one area might make sales and an interesting show for onlookers.
now that the PCC has relaxed its rule about soldering irons, i wonder if we could also have 3-D printers in the expo hall.

Lori, I could probably recruit a couple of students from PCC to demo a 3D printer. I already have one person in mind and will e-introduce you. Turns out it is winter session now so all the clubs are dormant. Spring classes start up next week, so the students will be more available, particularly if you offer them community hours.
If you want more stuff to demo, I am happy to have the SGVHAK rover on display or driving around this area. I wanted it visible to the kids coming for TNG and to drive traffic to our talk on Saturday afternoon. I have recruited a dedicated rover minder for Saturday.
Where does SUNI the Robot fit in this?
As far as I know, we aren't going to have something like TNG Playground this year. I was hoping the kid-friendly hands-on activities would be in the expo hall.

PVNet said they wanted to host a workshop on their classroom equipment. but we are 30 days out now, and none of their parents has stepped up to volunteer yet. so i'll take the idea of a large scale activity back off the table.
we'll do something fun on a demo level, if john is still up for it. :-)
i called about the second 3D printer to find out when that person might be willing to come. waiting to hear back.

we have multiple offers of 3D printers. it still has to come together as a coherent activity, so needs a few more days to cook.

Did we confirm this for the expo hall? Should we hold a booth or two for this?

i have received a lead on another 3D printer available at my son's work that we might be able to use. am following up.

thanks, john, that's a great offer.
i checked with the venue, and they are fine with us 3D printing in the expo hall. we just have to watch the power.
i have not heard back from the PVNet folks on this, so it feels like their level of interest is not high. i don't know anyone else who has that much equipment, so unless someone else chimes in along with john, a large-scale 3D printer offering is unlikely to happen.
john, i'll see what the chairs think about where we should set the 3D printing activity. no matter where we can set it up, you will have volunteers to help.
